Avengers: Endgame seemingly owns just about every box office record in 2019. After all, Marvel’s latest superhero ensemble is currently the highest-earning film of all time with its $2.798 billion worldwide gross.

But there’s one category where three other 2019 films have bested Endgame—and Honey Boy almost joined that group on Sunday.

This past weekend, Honey Boy—directed by Alma Har'el and written by its star Shia LaBeouf—opened in four theaters. The Amazon film pulled in $301,065 from those four venues, meaning its per-theater average stood at $75,266—just $1,000 behind Endgame’s opening weekend per-theater average earlier this year.

Obviously a LeBeouf vehicle like Honey Boy is at an advantage in this category, considering it opened in four theaters to Endgame’s 4,662 theaters. But the real takeaway here is Honey Boy’s ability to go viral in its targeted markets. Even with a low theater count, only 58 other movies have ever—in the history of film—been able to achieve such a massive per-theater average in less than 20 theaters.

The ability to achieve a similar level of success as Endgame—the most financially successful film of all time—means a number of things. It speaks to what film audiences are craving; it means Amazon’s marketing was incredibly effective; and historically, it means the movie is poised for success come awards season. Movies like La La Land, There Will Be Blood and Moonlight have all opened to a similar level of success in extremely limited theater runs.

The three other movies that managed to top Endgame’s opening weekend per-theater average in 2019 were Parasite, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and The Farewell.

First, The Farewell bested Marvel’s latest juggernaut by averaging $88,915 from four venues back in mid-July. Then just last month, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot topped The Farewell, raking in $93,520 from one theater. And just one weekend before that, Parasite pulled in an average of $131,072 from its three venues.

In fact, for that film’s first 15 days in theaters, Parasite bested Endgame’s per-theater average.
